I’m Nadine Smith—a journalist-turned-activist who couldn’t resist the pull to once again open my reporter’s notebook, dig deeper into stories and help people make sense of the forces steadily eroding our democracy.
I started out at an NPR radio station, then moved to newspaper, and I’ve written for several anthologies about civil rights movements of our time. Now, with censorship on the rise and TV news anchors growing more monochromatic and fearful, the journalist in me insisted on getting back into the fray.
That’s why I launched Wide Awake America.
Two months in, this platform is taking off—thanks to you. You’ve shared articles, subscribed, and helped increase the visibility of each post.
And it’s working. Between the Substack and the podcast, we’re reaching about 30,000 people with each article and episode. That’s 30,000 minds engaged, informed, and ready to push back against the forces trying to roll back progress.
Some of you have even taken the extra step of becoming paid subscribers. Because of your support, I’ve been able to invest in better editing software and upgrade my microphone.
My next big goal is to bring on more production support to book guests, prep the show, and get each episode ready for air—all while I continue my more-than-full-time job as Executive Director of Equality Florida.
As someone who has spent decades at the crossroads of journalism, activism, and human rights, I know how essential it is to cut through the noise. Here on Wide Awake America, I want to connect you with sharp minds for conversations refreshingly free of soundbites and talking-over-each-other chaos. Expect smart people speaking plainly about things that actually matter—to you, your family, our country, and the world.
I’ve seen firsthand how change happens—and how those in power try to stop it. I know that when we stay informed and engaged, we win.
Thank you for being part of this. If you haven’t subscribed yet, now is the perfect time. And if you’ve already joined, keep sharing, keep spreading the word, and stay wide awake.
