Did anyone else get serious Lord of the Rings flashbacks watching that bizarre Oval Office press conference?
Elon Musk strutted through the White House like he owned the place—because, in all the ways that matter, he does. Meanwhile, Trump sat slumped, silent, and diminished. If it felt familiar, maybe you remembered King Théoden and Wormtongue—where the so-called ruler was just a puppet while the real power was his creepy advisor.
Musk, in a T-shirt and baseball cap, flouted Trump’s dress code, grinned and rambled while his son interrupted Trump, picked his nose, and wiped his finger on the Resolute Desk. Trump , germaphobe that he is, recoiled but remained docile.
He spoke only when permitted. Fell silent when Musk took the floor. The power dynamic was unmistakable. And Musk absolutely reveled in it.
This isn’t Musk’s first time humiliating Trump in public. At the inauguration, Musk stood behind the presidential seal, casually delivering Nazi salutes to the small indoor crowd before stepping back to feign ignorance about the commotion that followed.
He also quipped with Netanyahu that he was the president in all but name.
It wasn’t a joke.
And then there was the hot mic.
Close observers have shared clips in which Musk’s young son, X, could be heard saying: "You're not really the president. You need to go away."
Watch it again.
Later he appears to tell Trump to “shut your mouth”
If a child that young is saying it, he’s repeating something he’s heard.
But perhaps more than any of the things said was the location of the event.
Why is Elon Musk holding press briefings in the Oval Office?
He is not an elected official. Yet he moves through the White House with absolute confidence, shaping policy, dismantling regulations, and directing vast sums of political and dark money wherever he pleases.
Musk’s power doesn’t come from holding office. It flows from his ability to bend governments at will. This wasn’t just a meeting.
It was a coronation.
He paid $44 billion for Twitter and just $280 million for the United States of America. Is it wrong that I’ve long ago come to terms with treason, and now am just blown away that he sold us out so cheaply?
Nadine, your reference to LOTR is so apt. And remember that Wormtongue actually ruled through the shadow intervention of Saruman (Putin?).
